Ray Sentes Brave Fighter For Asbestos Victims

Ray Sentes died on April 14, 2000 at 56. He had suffered for many years from asbestosis, having worked for years as an insulation worker in Canada in the 1960s. He had been in failing health for many years. Ray eventually obtained a university education and wrote his doctoral thesis at University of Regina on the history of the Canadian asbestos industry. We counted him as our best contact in Canada when trying to find out anything about the background of individuals and institutions of all kinds related to asbestos and health. He wrote a number of articles on asbestos in union publications and popular magazines. He was quoted often in the Canadian media as well, always with well-aimed, knowledgeable, condemnations of the companies and governmental officials and agencies involved. He was completing a book on the history of Canada's asbestos industry when he died. Ray was a good man and our friend. He is survived by his wife Sandra and two daughters, one of whom is also in the field of political science. Ray Sentes was a leader of the asbestos victims throughout the world and worked with the White Lung Association for over 15 years. We will miss him greatly.
